Redefine Task Lighting Through Presence
Innovation
Product
Interaction

Problem Statement
While smart lighting systems offer various features and settings, they often fail to respond intuitively to users’ changing routines, mental states, and environments.

100%
associated light
with mood.
60%
said they use task light the most in their work space.
40%
answered they rarely switch the modes in their task light.
55%
said their frustrations are that light does not fit well with certain activities.
Design a modular, interactive task lighting system that adapts to the user’s needs, natural rhythms, and surrounding environment.
Design Brief

Process
From ideation through concept development and user testing, Parous was designed with the user at its core. Beyond functionality, it became an exploration of how we control objects—and how interaction can reflect elements of our subconscious.

Final Chosen Concept
Desk task lamp that utilizes a time of flight (TOF) sensor to read when a user is working vs relaxing
FEATURES
-
Utilizes a Time-Of-Flight (TOF) sensor to detect when the user is in range
-
Work mode (Task Lighting)
-
When user is seated, the lamp focuses light downward, providing illumination for work
-
Side light remains off
-
Temp range is cooler (5000k-6000k) to support concentration
-
Ambient Mode (General Home Lighting)
-
When the user is out of range the lamp transitions to ambient lighting
-
The side lights bright, filling room with soft indirect light
-
Temp range is warmer (2700-3500K) to create comfortable atmosphere
-
Override mode = turn on/off
